History
Located in north Georgia in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Young Harris is in a valley not far from the Georgia and North Carolina border. Named after former Young Harris baseball coach and Georgia Senator Zell Miller, Miller helped raise the funds for the field that opened in 2000. Young Harris has a rich history of winning, though, with eight Georgia Junior College titles and one trip to the Junior College World Series in 2007.
Atmosphere
Young Harris fans are passionate about their team, and it shows. The baseball field is right next to the softball field, and I saw many fans move from one field to the other after the softball game ended. Fans stayed engaged the entire game, giving the Mountain Lions a strong home field advantage. I also can't talk about Young Harris without acknowledging the view; with it being in the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are mountain views and gorgeous sunsets, which will always get a bonus point from me.
Concessions
There is one concession stand at the Zell, and it serves exactly what you want at a baseball game. One highlight is that it's a bit cheaper than other places I've been, which is great since there aren't a ton of food options in Young Harris; most folks seemed to be grabbing their dinner at the park.
Access
There is really no way around it - Young Harris is kind of in the middle of nowhere. There are some hotels in the area, though most of them are designed as mountain vacation getaways rather than somewhere to just pass through. There's also a limited parking situation, and basically all of it is in 'park at your own risk' territory, so just something to keep in mind.
Final Thoughts
Call me biased to games in the mountains, but I would happily head back to Young Harris, even if it is in the middle of nowhere. With engaged fans, free parking, and cheap concessions, it really is just one of those places I think every fan should experience.
