History
Located in Aiken, SC, just across the state line from Georgia, Roberto Hernandez Stadium is named after former Pacer and MLB player Roberto Hernandez. A small hall of fame under the bleachers boasts not only accomplishments of the USC Aiken baseball team, but Roberto Hernandez himself; he donated a few of his trophies and MLB jerseys to be displayed. USC Aiken is a D2 school clearly proud of their baseball history, and it shows at this field.
Atmosphere
Even though the field is separate from USC Aiken's main campus, there was a solid amount of student support in the crowd. Even though it wasn't a full house, the fans that were there stayed engaged the whole time. All seating is general admission and is a mix of chairbacks and bleachers. The seating is mostly shaded, which is definitely appreciated in the South Carolina sun.
Concessions
Concessions at Roberto Hernandez are pretty affordable, and they’ve got a solid collection of your favorites. Because it’s disconnected from Aiken, it’s a solid option if you don’t have a chance to go grab food pregame. I did see folks bringing in outside drinks, though, so probably an option for food as well.
Access
Parking is free and right next to the park, which is very welcome on both fronts. It’s about a 10 minute drive from I-20, and there are plenty of hotels in the area. Because it’s just across the state line from Augusta, it’s also easy to stay there and drive in. Just keep that distance in mind, though, as hotel prices may skyrocket around The Masters.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I very much enjoyed my time at USC Aiken. Because the stadium clearly has a rich history, it’s a fun stop in for any baseball history buffs or folks who were fans of Roberto Hernandez during his playing years. Overall, if you find yourself in the area, I’d definitely say you get your moneys worth if you pop in for a game.
