Georgia State took on the top seeded Southern Miss Eagles in game five of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Due to weather delays and the general running behind that happens in conference tournaments, this turned into the prime time game and fans that tuned in were in for a treat.
Southern Miss started off hot, with Matthew Russo driving in two runs on a single through the left side of the infield in the first. The first inning also saw the ejection of Georgia State’s head coach just five pitches into the game.
Georgia State’s bats came alive in the top of the third, with Carter Bailey driving in a run and scoring off of a John Beverley bunt and a throwing error by Southern Miss. After a lengthy delay for lightning in the area, Beverley stayed hot and drove in two runs on a single to give Georgia State the lead in the fourth.
Southern Miss began to battle back in the fifth with a 353 foot homer from Kyle Morrison, and tied the game with a double from Tucker Stockman in the sixth. The bats continued to be hot for the Golden Eagles, as Ben Higdon and Russo both drove in runs in the bottom of the seventh to give them the lead. Russo also drove what would ultimately be the winning run in the eighth.
Georgia State scored in the eighth and the seventh off of knocks by Nick Garagozzo and Adam Haber, but couldn’t get the job done in the ninth.
Southern Miss ultimately took the win 7-6, and will play the winner of Troy and South Alabama on Friday. Georgia State will play the loser of that game on Thursday.
