Bob Warn Field - Indiana State University
History
Located in the heart of Terre Haute, IN, Bob Warn Field has been the home of Sycamores baseball since 1978. The Sycamores have made the NCAA tournament 13 times since 1978, with one College World Series appearance in 1986. Those years are listed along the outfield wall, with conference tournament wins also listed on the brick wall just outside the stadium. The field was renamed in 2009 from Sycamore Field to be named after former head coach Bob Warn.
Atmosphere
Fans of Sycamore baseball are deeply engaged, which was even more evident by the fact that I was there after the academic year had ended. Even with the lack of students, fans were cheering from first pitch on; it’s clear that Indiana State fans not only come just to watch good baseball, but to cheer on their team. It is a mix of chairbacks and bleacher seating, with chairbacks being reserved and bleachers being general admission.
Concessions
There is one main concession stand at Bob Warn, and it serves all your ballpark favorites like hotdogs, chips, candy, and Pepsi products. There is also a selection of beer and seltzer available, including an option from a local brewery. While no outside food and drink is allowed in the park, there are plenty of fast food and sit down restaurants within ten minutes of Bob Warn Field.
Access
Just off of I-70, Terre Haute is not far from Indianapolis if coming from the north. There are plenty of hotels in the area, and most of them are along the main drag in town. Once you get to campus, parking is free with both a paved and grass lot available. Even on a busy night at “The Bob”, parking was easy to find just before game time when I got there. The field is a little separate from campus, so even if going during the school year, you won’t also be fighting student parking.
Final Thoughts
Indiana State is truly a ‘best of both worlds’ kind of park. While there aren’t mid-inning games, the facilities are nice and modern, and I’ll never complain about free parking on a college campus. Overall, Bob Warn is a great stadium that, for opening in 1978, is in great condition for any fan rolling through Terre Haute.
