USI Baseball Field - University of Southern Indiana
History
Opening in 1974, the USI Baseball Field has seen the Screaming Eagles (incredible mascot) through the transition to D1; they became full members of the Ohio Valley Conference in 2025. A fully dirt field, the latest update to the field came in 2008 with the addition of the new scoreboard in left. USI saw success at the D2 level, winning the National Championship in 2010 and 2014. Outside of the Screaming Eagles, the USI Baseball Field was used as the practice facility during the making of "A League of Her Own."
Atmosphere
The one downside of USI's field is the lack of chairback seating - there are bleachers on either side of the press box, with home fans taking the seating on the third base line and visitors taking the first base side. There is a small picnic area down the third base line, but that seemed to fill up fast so I'd recommend bringing a blanket or something to sit on in the bleachers. Fans are somewhat engaged, but it's quieter than other parks I've visited.
Concessions
There is one small concession stand down the first base line, which sells Pepsi products, hot dogs, popcorn, and candy. They do take both cash and card, though, which is becoming less and less common as most places become cashless facilities. Outside of the stadium, Evansville has plenty of restaurants and fast food places if you'd prefer to get a full meal, though prices seem to be on par with other small D1 schools.
Access
It is relatively easy to get to Southern Indiana, and parking is free and close; just be aware that all of the lots are close to foul territory, so you run the risk of a ball hitting your car. Parking was plentiful, though, even though I was there as graduation festivities were beginning at USI. I will warn it's a bit of an uphill walk from the main parking lot, so something to be aware of if you have mobility issues.
Final Thoughts
USI feels old school; like you've stumbled across a field that would easily fit in something set 20/30 years ago. I think there is room for improvement, but if you've got an open afternoon and no plans, USI scratches that classic feeling baseball game itch.
