History

Daikin Park is the current name of the home of the Houston Astros. The ballpark originally opened in 2000 and has gone through a few name changes over the years, but it’s been a staple of downtown Houston baseball for more than two decades. If you're like me, the name you'll probably always think of it as is Minute Maid. It was one of the first MLB parks built with a retractable roof, which is absolutely necessary in Houston’s summer heat.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere here can get loud — especially in October. Astros fans show up, and when the roof is closed, the noise really traps inside and makes the place feel even more intense. Even at a game early in the season, the roof makes the fan energy feel big at all times. The train above left field (a nod to Houston’s railroad history) is a fun touch and a cool part of the park’s personality. On a personal note, I wouldn't recommend the back of the sections around where I sat (Sec 155), as the second level overhang blocked views of popups.

Concessions

Food at Daikin Park offers a strong mix of ballpark classics and Houston flavor. You’ll find barbecue, Tex-Mex options, loaded nachos, and plenty of craft beer choices. Of course, there are also your traditional hot dogs and popcorn if you want to keep it simple. The variety is solid, and it’s easy to find something that feels very Houston.

Access

One of the big perks is the downtown location. You can drive and park in nearby garages or lots, but traffic can get busy on game nights. Rideshare is a popular option, and Houston’s METRORail has a stop within walking distance of the stadium, making public transit a convenient choice. If you do go with METRORail, take the Green and Purple lines to the Convention District Capitol Wb stop. If you’re staying downtown, it’s an easy walk. If it's a giveaway night, definitely get there early. I got there almost 30 minutes before gates opened, and there was already a crowd to get in for the Jose Altuve bobblehead.
