History
Located in North Charleston, Nielsen Field has been the home of Charleston Southern baseball since 2001. Yes, the irony of Charleston Southern being in North Charleston is not lost on me. The Buccaneers played their first 12 seasons at Nielson Field with no lights, playing the first game with them in April 2013. Accolades and the teams Charleston Southern players have been drafted by line the outfield fence, reminding players of the storied history of the program.
Atmosphere
With free admission and parking, Charleston Southern baseball is one of the more affordable things to do in Charleston. There is bleacher seating, but the real highlight here is the rocking chairs lining the backstop - that is where I watched the game, and it's one of the most enjoyable ways I've caught a game. There is solid fan support that stays engaged in the game, and that combined with the Pirates of the Caribbean theme when the Buccaneers score runs make for a fun atmosphere.
Concessions
There is a small concession stand serving sodas and snacks, but it seemed like the majority of folks brought food and drinks from the fast food restaurants not far off of campus. The concessions that are available are relatively well priced, though, which is nice for a late game snack.
Access
Like mentioned above, Charleston Southern offers free parking, though it is a bit of a walk from the stadium. Campus is not far from I-26 and also not far from the airport for anyone who may be flying into Charleston. There are also a ton of hotels in the Charleston area, just watch out for price increases during Spring Break season.
Final Thoughts
I would happily go back to Charleston Southern the next time I find myself in the area. Between the free parking and admission, the caliber of baseball played, and the ability to watch a game in the rocking chair seats, Nielsen Field has cemented itself as a must stop in my mind.
