History
With expansive rework in the 2025 offseason, North Alabama has quickly updated to reflect its relatively recent move to D1. Named after former coach Mike D. Lane, Lane Field was first built in 1984 and saw North Alabama through many seasons of success at the D2 level. Joining D1 in 2018 and the ASUN in 2022, North Alabama has already appeared in one ASUN conference tournament and hopes to continue that growth moving forward.
Atmosphere
Nestled into the edge of campus, fans and students filled this relatively small park. The new video board and updated seating, though, adds a dynamic view to the game North Alabama had previously been missing. The stands were full of many alumni, and the pride they feel for North Alabama is palpable in the air. Many of them know the names of the athletes on the field, and they stayed engaged for all 9 innings.
Concessions
The one lone concession stand in the concourse under the stairs serves your typical food options - hot dogs, sodas, candy, and chips. A few pop up stands serve alcohol, making it satisfying while also not necessarily being the place you'd plan to have a full meal. There are many food options in Florence, though, making it easy to eat before or after the game.
Access
As a native Alabamian, there's no easy way to put this... but there is no easy way to Florence, AL. Once you finally find your way to campus, though, there is a small parking lot as well as street parking. If you'd prefer the parking lot, though, definitely give yourself plenty of time - I arrived about 45 minutes before first pitch and it was already full, though that was on opening weekend. Florence (and Muscle Shoals, just across the river) have plenty of hotels for any out of towners, though ride share is extremely limited if available at all.
Final Thoughts
North Alabama does an excellent job of keeping baseball simple while also offering modern amenities like chairback seats and a large video board. If between inning games and flashy lights are your style, this may not be for you, but Mike D. Lane Field offers comfortable seating and easy viewing while also not feeling like it's stuck in the past.
